MOMOLAND is a South Korean girl group created by MLD Entertainment (formerly Duble Kick Company) in 2016 through the reality show Finding Momoland.

Eventual winners of the show – Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Jane, Nayun, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy – officially became part of the group and debuted on November 10, 2016 with the EP Welcome to Momoland. In 2017, they added Daisy and Kim Taeha to the group.

2016 to 2017: Finding Momoland and Official Debut

Mnet launched the survival reality program Finding Momoland in June 2016, where a group of seven members were selected from 10 trainees.

Prior to the end of the broadcast, it was decided that the remaining members are going to debut as a group.

They were given a final mission of gathering a total of 3,000 spectators, which they failed, causing a delay on their debut to prepare promotional events, fan meetings, and guerilla performances.

On October 25, 2016, the group was appointed as ambassadors for Plan Korea, an International Relief Development NGO, even without an official debut.

They held their debut showcase on November 9 and released their debut extended play (EP), Welcome to Momoland, the following day through Mnet’s M! Countdown.

On December 27, six of the members (except Yeonwoo) attended the SBS Gayo Daejeon after battling with lower back pain issues.

From January 12 to 16, 2017, Momoland did volunteer work at the Pak Luong Village in Taipei, Taiwan to encourage Happy Mov students to participate in Kindergarten construction service.

On March 28, MLD Entertainment announced that Daisy and Taeha will be the new additions to the group, increasing the number of members to nine. Daisy was a former participant in Finding Momoland, while Taeha was known for her appearance on Produce 101 Season 1.

The group had a comeback performance on The Show on April 25.

Momoland released the digital single “Wonderful Love” on June 16 after an EDM version was played on KBS’ Music Bank on June 3. On July 22, they performed the said EDM version on The Show.

The group released their second EP, Freeze!, simultaneously debuting the title track of the same name on The Show.

2018: Breakthrough, Japanese debut

On January 3, 2018, Momoland made a comeback with their third EP, Great!, featuring the title track “Bboom Bboom”. In the same month, however, the group was accused by Serebro of plagiarizing their song “Mi Mi Mi”.

Shinsadong Tiger, the composer of “Bboom Bboom”, denied the allegations by pointing out that the bass line of the songs is commonly heard in retro house or swing electronic genres, as well as the 4-stanza chord.

On January 11, they performed the song on Mnet’s M! Countdown and won a trophy for it. They also took home wins on other shows such as Show Champion on January 31 and The Show on February 6.

From February 28 to March 4, Momoland held promotional events in Tokyo and Osaka. The group reportedly gathered some 25,000 spectators in the duration of their events in Japan, while approximately 100 media outfits participated in the showcase held at Tower Records in Shibuya.

The group also performed their songs “JJan! Koong! Kwong,” “Freeze,” “Wonderful Love” (EDM version), and “Bboom Bboom”. The group signed with King Records for their upcoming Japan debut on June 13, 2018, as well as the release of the Japanese version of their hit song “Bboom Bboom”.

On May 23, MLD Entertainment announced that Momoland is set to make a comeback on June 26, 2018.
