SF9, short for Sensational Feeling 9, is a group of South Korean boys formed by FNC Entertainment, the first male idol group to debut from the company. They officially debuted with nine members – Youngbin, Inseong, Jaeyoon, Dawon, Zuho, Rowoon, Taeyang, Hwiyoung, and Chani – on October 5, 2016, with the release of their first single album, Feeling Sensation.

2015: Pre-debut and NEOZ School

Prior to their official debut, SF9 performed as a group of 11 members in Japan on December 11, 2015.

In May of the following year, they joined FNC Entertainment’s survival show d.o.b (Dance or Band) as the group NEOZ Dance, competing against NEOX Band, who later debuted as Honeyst. NEOZ Dance eventually won the show with their first song, “K.O,” which was later featured in their single album Feeling Sensation.

In August 2016, they were renamed as SF9.

2016: Official debut

SF9 released their first single album, Feeling Sensation, featuring the lead single “Fanfare” on October 5, 2016. The album debuted in eighth place and peaked at the sixth spot on the Gaon Album Chart.

On October 6, the group made their official stage debut with a performance of “Fanfare” on Mnet’s M! Countdown. The music video for the song also ranked sixth on Yin Yue Tai Weekly Chart and seventh on the Yin Yue Tai Monthly Chart.

The group ended their promotions for “Fanfare” on Novembers 6 with a performance on SBS’ Inkigayo. Shortly after, they began their promotional activities for the second single from the album, “K.O.” on November 15. “K.O.” was initially released by the group through the survival reality show, d.o.b (Dance or Band). At the end of 2016, Feeling Sensation was ranked 78th for its total album sales for the year, an impressive feat for a rookie group.

On December 22, SF9 released a music video for the song “So Beautiful” as a gift to their fans. The song was originally recorded as an OST for the group’s interactive web drama, Click Your Heart, before being released as a digital single.

2017: More releases and Japanese debut

On February 6, SF9 released their first mini-album, Burning Sensation, which features a total of six tracks, including the lead single “Roar”. The album landed at number six on the Billboard World Albums Chart dated February 15.

Two months after the release of Burning Sensation, it was reported that SF9 was preparing for their second comeback of the year.

On April 7, while in the middle of gearing for their Korean release, the group held their Japan debut showcase in front of 1,300 fans.

On April 18, they released their new EP, Breaking Sensation, featuring six songs, including the title track “Easy Love”. Upon release, the album ranked number two on the U.S. K-Pop Album Chart.

The group made their official Japanese debut on June 6, followed by the release of their debut Japanese– a Japanese version of their song “Fanfare” – the next day. The album took the number one spot on Tower Records Chart for single albums and number four on the Oricon Chart.

On September 22, FNC Entertainment confirmed that SF9 will have a third comeback for 2017. And as part of their preparations for the new album, the group traveled to California to film the music video.

On October 12, they released their third EP, Knights of the Sun, composed of six tracks, including the title track “O Sole Mio”.

In December, they also released their first Japanese studio album, Sensational Feeling Nine.

2018: More albums and first Korean concert

SF9 released their fourth EP, Mamma Mia! on February 26, featuring the title track of the same name along with five other songs. The album peaked at number 3 on the Gaon chart after selling more than 11,000 copies.

Three months later, the group released their third Japanese single, “Mamma Mia!” which they promoted through a Japanese tour titled SF9 Zepp Tour 2018 MAMMA MIA!. The tour included stops in Osaka, Aichi, and Tokyo from May 29 to June 1.

On July 31, SF9 made their Korean comeback with the release of their fifth EP, Sensuous, featuring the lead single “Now or Never”.

In August of the same year, the group held a fan meeting in South America, beginning at the Auditorio Blackberry in Mexico City. It was followed by a fan meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil and another one in Taipei in September.

On October 27, SF9 held their very first domestic concert, “Dreamer” at the Yes24 Live Concert Hall.

2019: Narcissus, RPM, and UNLIMITED Tour

The group’s 6xth EP was, Narcissus, was released on February 20, 2019. The album featured a total of six tracks, including the lead single “Enough”.

In the following month, SF9 released their second Japanese album, Illuminate, for which they also held a tour called SF9 2019 ZEPP TOUR “ILLUMINATE”. The tour was held in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Namba on April 2, 4, and 5, respectively.

Following the conclusion of their Japanese tour, SF9 also embarked on their 2019 SF9 USA — Europe Live Tour ‘UNLIMITED’ concert series. The tour included a total of 10 stops in the United States (Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles) and Europe (Moscow, Warsaw, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, London).

In between tours, the group was selected as the new models for Korean chicken joint Toreore, alongside actress Shin Ye-eun.

In May of the same year, SF9 was part of the lineup at KCON 2019 JAPAN, where they performed on the Mcountdown stage on the second day. They joined other idol groups such as IZ*ONE, Pentagon, Twice, Nature, fromis_9, GWSN, ONEUS, and VAV.

On June 17, the group released its seventh EP, RPM. The album consists of six tracks, including the title track of the same name.

The following month, they also participated at KCON 2019 New York which was held at the Madison Square Garden. They performed on the second day alongside SEVENTEEN, AB6IX, (G)-IDLE, fromis_9, and VERIVERY.

2020: First Collection

SF9 released their first Korean studio album on January 7, 2020. First Collection features a total of 10 tracks, including the lead single “Good Guy”. Nine days after its release, the group earned their first-ever music show win with the sone on M! Countdown.
